☆  cards  トランプ

I’ve always wondered why the Japanese katakana word for cards is “trump”… do you know why?

In English, the trump card is the winning card. Many hundreds of years ago, there was a card game called “triumph” which go shortened to “trump”. So I guess that is where the Japanese word came from? Do you know if this is right or not? If you know, please let me know on Facebook!

So, basically, if you said to someone “Do you want to play cards? / Do you want to play a game of cards?” it would be fine. However, if you said, “Do you want to play trump?” the person you are talking to might be a little confused, are you talking about the American President?!
