So, interestingly, you might find that your dictionary only lists this as a noun, and not a verb. Mine does, it says that it is noun that means the same as “evaluation.” However, it is definitely also a verb – it just depends on which dictionary you check! Ha ha 🙂
As a verb, it means to “review” or “analyze” something and when you critique something you are usually looking at it to find mistakes or to judge it. So while “review” and “analyze” are neither positive nor negative ways to look at something, when you critique something you are generally looking for faults. In other words, it is a negative nuance, not positive.
