Just like eye contact, body language is another important part of communication. We’ve talked about this before I’m sure. Body language is more than 50% of the meaning in communication. What this means exactly is that we are using our eyes to look at the person to understand their message just as much as we are using our ears to listen to their words.
On the phone, unless you’re using a video camera, you can’t see the other person’s body language and so a lot of the meaning now comes from intonation. Obviously the words the person is saying are very important too, but when you are trying to understand English remember to look at body language and listen for intonation too, this will really help you.
