☆ pipe dream　幻想

A pipe dream is a hope or a plan that you have which you know will probably never happen. So… I like to know the origin of words, and I have always thought that this was related to surfing! I thought this was talking about the famous “pipeline” wave that you get in Hawaii, and that these perfect waves were hard to find, so it was a “pipe dream”.
It turns out that is not the origin at all!!! The original meaning is from the 1800’s and it is talking about the fantasies and amazing dreams that people had when they smoked opium pipes!!! Oh my goodness, I had no idea! Ha ha. But, actually I still like my “original” meaning. 🙂
