When you indicate your opinion, or intention, or a fact, you mention it in an indirect way. If you said it in a direct way, you would use “tell” or “say”. Here are some examples to compare:
My boss indicated that he would give me a promotion. (This is still not certain.)
My boss told me I would be getting a promotion. (This is certain.)
When she left she didn’t indicate when she would get in touch again.
When she left she didn’t say when she would get in touch again.
He indicated that he still loved her. (His actions rather than his words showed that he still loved her.)
He said that he still loved her.
He nodded his head to indicate that he had heard me.
He told me he had heard me.
Can you see the difference?
