Do you know Bob Marley the reggae singer? He once said, “Don’t gain the world and lose your soul; wisdom is better than silver or gold.” What do you think? Do you agree with this idea? Would you rather gain wisdom than silver or gold (i.e. money)?
What are some other things that you can gain?
You can gain confidence. “She was gaining confidence at her new job.”
You can gain experience. “The program allowed students to gain experience in a work environment.”
Gain is used when we get something profitable or desirable, which is why we use it with words such as confidence, experience, and money and so on. However, it is sometimes used with the negative situation of “gain weight” as an alternative to “get fat”. This is because “getting fat” has a very negative image in our society, whereas “gaining weight” seems less terrible than getting fat, even though it is the same thing!
