Something that is significant is important. We use “significant” to describe amounts, facts, actions, and even people. Here are some examples:
The drug appears to have a significant effect on the disease. (In other words, a large or noticeable effect.)
This new law is going to be very significant for lower income families. (important)
I think it is a significant fact to consider. (important).
He gave her a significant glance. (important or meaningful glance.)
And when talking about people, we often hear people talk about their “SO” or “significant other”, which refers to their wife, husband or the person that they are in a relationship with. So for example, if you go to a party by yourself when you are married, you might have this kind of conversation:
Host: “Hi, thanks for coming! Where is your significant other?”
You: “Oh, he’s at home sick tonight, sorry he couldn’t make it.”
