There are a few different meanings of today’s word. You can
gain experience from doing something. Or you can gain confidence.
In both these cases you get more of something (such as confidence)
by doing something.

Here are some examples:
This job will give you a chance to gain experience.
He was nervous at first, but once he began speaking, he gained confidence.
You can gain confidence speaking English by speaking for five minutes each day.

Another similar use of “gain” is to mean “increase”… for example, “People often gain
weight during the Christmas holidays, and then they make a resolution to lose
weight in the New Year!”
