“Terrible” is used in two ways. Firstly in conversation, it is used to say
that something is very unpleasant, or dreadful.
For example:
I know this has been a terrible shock for you.
I thought it was terrible!
What a terrible idea.

The second way is in writing (and sometimes conversation) to say that
something is very shocking or distressing.
For example:
There was a terrible car crash near here.
Hurricane Sandy caused terrible devastation last month.

I hope we don’t need to use this word very often!
