Another way to make it easier to learn new words in English,
is to make sure that they are meaningful words for you. So
instead of learning random words on a random topic chosen
by someone else, chose a topic that is important for you, and
learn the words you often use in Japanese. Yes, that means
you might want to start by thinking in Japanese! Of course,
I always say it’s better to think in English if you want to speak
English – but when you are learning English and new words,
it can help to think in Japanese.

So, think about a topic that is meaningful for you – it might
be “letting go” like this month’s topic, or it might be something
more practical like “money”, then make a list of the words and
even phrases that you often use in Japanese. Once you have
your list, go through and write down the words you already know
in English, and check your dictionary for the words you don’t
know in English. If you can, try to write a meaningful paragraph
using the words you have chosen. For example, what is a typical
question for the topic you chose? Try to write a meaningful
answer to that question. This will help you learn and remember
the words more easily, and you’ll also be prepared if someone asks
you about that topic – whether they ask in Japanese or English, you’ll
be prepared!

新しい単語の覚え方のひとつは、その単語を自分にとって意味のある言葉にすることです。
そこで、誰か他の人がランダムに選んだトピックでランダムな単語を覚えるのではなく、あなたにとって重要なトピックを選び、日本語でもよく使う言葉を覚えて行けばいいのです。
そうすると、まずは日本語で考えてしまうかもしれませんよね！
もちろん、私はいつも、英語を話すのならば英語で考えた方が良いと言っています。
しかし、新しい単語を覚える際には、日本語で考えるのもいいのです。

あなたにとって意味のあるトピックを選びましょう。
今月のテーマの“手放す”でも良いですし、もっと実用的な“お金”でも良いでしょう。
そして、日本語でよく使う言葉やフレーズのリストを作りましょう。
リストを作ったら、その中ですでに知っている言葉を英語で書き、知らない言葉を辞書で調べます。
出来るなら、選んだ言葉を使って文を作ります。
例えば、あなたの選んだトピックの典型的な質問は何ですか？
その質問に対して意味のある答えを書いてみましょう。
こうすることで、単語も覚えますし、誰かにそのトピックについて質問をされた時に、それが日本語でも英語でも、準備が出来ていることになりますね！
