I think today’s word, “illustrate” is very interesting…
When we “illustrate” something, we explain about it,
using words! But I’m sure you know that the noun,
an “illustration” is a drawing…

So why do we “illustrate” something with words, rather than
by drawing pictures? I thought maybe it was because the origin
of the word was that people did draw pictures or diagrams… but
I was wrong, the Latin origin is “illustratus” which actually means to
“make bright” in other words to make something “clear” by explaining
it! Interesting!

今日の単語“illustrate”はとても面白い言葉です。
何かを“illustrate”するということは、言葉を使ってその説明をするということです。
しかし、この単語が名詞になると、“illustration”、絵を描くとなるのは、ご存知ですね。

では、絵を書くのではなく、なぜ言葉で説明をするのでしょう？
この言葉の語源が、絵や図を描くということか、と考えましたが、違いました。
ラテン語の語源は“illustrarus”で、“明るくする”という意味です。
つまり、説明をすることで何かを明確にする、ということです。
