The mini word column at the bottom of the page for this week has the
following sentence: “lose all feeling in one’s leg”. Has this ever happened
to you? It happens to me often – whenever I sit in one position for too long,
but usually instead of saying that I have lost “feeling” in my leg, or foot, or
wherever, I would say, “my leg has gone dead.”

When your “leg is dead” it means that there is no feeling at all. However,
soon after you start to move again, your leg comes back to life, right?
And then you get the tingling feeling, right? In English we call that “pins
and needles” because it feels like someone is pricking you with small
pins and needles! Is there something similar in Japanese?

手帳の下に載っている単語ミニコラムの今週の文章は
“lose all feelings in one’s leg (足がしびれる)”
です。
こうなったことはありますか？
私は、同じ格好で長く座っているとよくなります。
しかし足の“feeling”がなくなったというよりも、
“my leg has gone dead(足が死んでしまった)”
と言います。

足が死んだということは、感覚が全くないということです。
しかし動き始めればまた生き返りますけどね。
それから、チリチリした感じになりますよね？
これを英語では“pins and needles”と言います。
小さなピンや針でチクチク刺されている感じだからです。
日本語でも同じような表現がありますか？
