☆ elaborate　詳しく述べる

If you elaborate on something, you say more about it. “Could you
elaborate, please?” or “Would you care to elaborate?” are two ways
to ask for more details on what the other person is saying.

For example:
Wife: You won’t be able to use the car tomorrow; it is at the crash repairs…
Husband: What?! Would you care to elaborate?

Child: I didn’t do my homework last night.
Teacher: Would you care to elaborate as to why?

These two situations are a little silly, kind of like the “unfunny jokes” I talked
about last week. 😉 However, this word is often used like this in serious and
non-serious situations – when the person is not really keen to give more
details, but you want or need them to.

何かについて詳しく述べるということは、そのことについて詳しく語るということです。
相手の人に詳しく話してほしい場合には、
“Could you elaborate, please? ”
(詳しく話していただけますか？)
や
“Would you care to elaborate?”
などと言います。

例：
妻：明日は車を使えないわ。修理工場に…
夫：何？！詳しく話してもらおうか。

こども：きのう宿題をやりませんでした。
先生：その理由を詳しく述べてもらえますか？

これらのおかしなシチュエーションは、先週お話しした面白くない冗談とも言えますね。;)　しかし今日の言葉は、深刻な状況でも、そうでない状況でも使われます。つまり、相手があまり話をしたがらない時にはこのように言い、詳しく述べてもらうのです。
