When we meet someone for the first time, it is usual to say something
such as, “it is/was a pleasure meeting you.” It you want to be a little
more formal, you can use today’s word: “It is/was an honor meeting you.”

You would use “honor” instead of pleasure if the person you met was
someone that you admired and had wanted to meet. So meeting them
seems like a privilege, something that you didn’t expect could happen to you.

On the other hand, if the person you meet is someone that you didn’t know
anything about previously, for example someone introduced to you by a friend
at a party, then you would use “pleasure”.

“it is(was) a pleasure meeting you. ”
(お会いできて嬉しいです)
などと言うのが一般的です。
もう少しフォーマルな言い方だったら、今日の言葉を使って
“it is(was) an honor meeting you. ”
(お会いできて光栄です)

と言えるでしょう。

相手の人が、あなたが尊敬し会いたいと思っていた人でしたら“pleasure”の代わりに“honor”と言います。
その人に会えるのが栄誉だったり、信じられないというような時に使いますね。

逆に、例えばパーティなどで友達に紹介された人など、前もって何も知らない人と会った時には“pleasure”を使います。
