☆ joke　冗談

After teaching English and hearing from students that they can’t
understand English jokes, I started thinking about jokes and what
they were… and whether in fact it’s important to understand them.
And my conclusion was “no” it’s not really important to understand
jokes in English!

Often an English “joke” is actually something sarcastic or something
that makes fun of another person. In this case, it’s probably better if you
don’t understand it! And in the case that it is a real joke, such as a
knock-knock joke or a question and answer style joke, then the person
you are with will probably be able to explain it to you. It might not be so
funny once they’ve explained it, but in fact, it probably wasn’t that funny
anyway!

英語を教えていて、生徒さんから英語の冗談が理解できない、という話をよく聞きます。
そこで冗談について、そしてジョークとは何かということを考えるようになりました。
実際、冗談を理解することが重要かということも。
そして私の出した結論はNOです。
英語の冗談を理解することはそれほど重要ではないのです。

英語の冗談は、皮肉や人を馬鹿にするようなものが多いです。
そういった場合は、ジョークを理解できない方が良いですね！
そして、“ノック・ノック・ジョーク”やクエスチョン形式のように本当の冗談だった場合は、相手の人がそれを説明してくれるでしょう。
しかし、冗談は説明をすると大して面白くなくなるでしょう。
まあ、最初からそう面白いものではなかったかもしれませんけどね！
