Do you know the Adidas slogan, “Impossible is nothing”? Of
course, you do, right? It’s everywhere! When I first heard this
slogan, I had been living in Japan for a few years, and I honestly
thought it was a grammatical mistake made by the Adidas Japan
company, because I was so familiar with the phrase, “nothing is
impossible.” I asked some foreign friends and they thought the same
thing!

Now of course, I realize that it wasn’t a Japanese company that
created the slogan, and that it is actually a very clever statement.
In English when we say “X is nothing” what we mean is that “X is
easy for us.”

So, the meaning of this slogan is that thanks to my Adidas sports
gear, doing something that is “impossible” is actually easy…

アディダスのスローガン、“Impossible is nothing”をご存知ですか？
そこら中で目にしますから、もちろん知っていますよね！
最初にこのスローガンを聞いた時には、日本に数年住んだ頃だったので、本当にアディダス・ジャパンが文法を間違えたと思ってしまいました。
“Nothing is impossible”というフレーズはよく聞きますからね！
ネイティブの友人たちも、同じことを思ったそうです。

今はもちろん、日本支社が文法を間違えたのではないことは分かっています。
そして、これはとても賢いスローガンですよね。英語で、“X is nothing.”と言ったら、“Xはなんてことない”という意味になります。

つまり、このスローガンは、アディダスのスポーツギアのおかげで“不可能な”ことをするのはなんてことはない…という意味ですね。
