Have you ever watched one of the reality TV shows where the
contestants battle against each other to stay on the show until
the next week? For example, American Idol, where each person
has to sing and be judged as to whether they get to stay or not.

Often that kind of battle is described as “intense”. For example,
“the battle for first place is intense.”

You can also describe a person as intense. Usually it means that
they are very focused and concentrate hard on what they do. Of course
it also means they feel and show their emotions in an extreme way…
so it may have a negative nuance depending on the person. And so,
they may or may not like to be described as an intense person! Would
you describe yourself as intense?

例えば、歌を歌い、勝ち残れるかどうかを審査されるアメリカン・アイドルなどがそうですね。

つまりは、集中力が高く自分のやることにフォーカスできる人のことです。

ですから、人によってネガティブなニュアンスを持つこともあります。
「Intenseな人」、と言われるのを嫌がる人もいるかもしれないということですね！
