Do you know this word? It is a common word used in the news when
talking about riots and conflict. For example, “The president’s speech
was meant to calm everyone down, but it just agitated the crowd.”

If someone is looking tense or upset, you could ask them:
“What are you agitated about?”

By the way, if the situation is a positive one, then you can use the word
“encourage” instead.

今日の言葉、「agitate(扇動する)」は、ご存知ですか？
暴動や紛争などについて語る際によく使う言葉ですね。

例：“The president’s speech was meant to calm everyone down, but it just agitated the crowd.
(大統領の演説は、群衆を鎮めるためだったが、逆に皆を扇動してしまった)”

不機嫌だったり、ピリピリしている人がいたらこのように聞いてみても良いでしょう。

ところで、ポジティブな状況の場合は、「agitate」ではなく「encourage」を使います。
