☆ shame　残念なこと

This is one of the hardest words for my students. When
I say, “It’s a shame”, often my students hear, “It’s ashamed”…
In fact, “It’s ashamed” is not correct English, so whenever
someone says, “It’s a shame” you can be sure that they feel
regret about what the thing they are talking about.

The correct way to say, “It’s ashamed” would be “It’s embarrassing”,
“I’m embarrassed” or “I was embarrassed” (depending on whether
it is a past or present story.)

今日の言葉「shame(残念なこと)」は、生徒さんたちにとって最も難しい言葉のひとつです。私が“It’s a shame”と言うと、“It’s ashamed”に聞こえてしまうようです。

しかし、実際には“It’s ashamed”は、正しい英語ではありません。
誰かが“It’s a shame”と言ったら、それはその人が後悔をしているということです。

“It’s ashamed”を正しく言うと、“It’s embarrassing”、または“I’m embarrassed”
もしくは、過去形なら“I was embarrassed”になります。
