In online marriage partner finding services many people describe themselves
as being “average height”. Unfortunately it seems that men and women’s idea
of “average” is a little bit different. So when the two people meet in person,
the woman usually feels that the man is shorter than she expected! The
man believes he is average height, and he probably is… but the woman
was expecting someone taller. Ha ha.

Also, “average” is usually used by people to describe themselves, not others.
For example, I’m average height, with average length hair. If you use “average”
to describe another person, it is usually used in a derogatory way. For example,
the nuance of “he was average height” is that the man was short. Does this
word have the same nuance in Japanese?

残念ながら、女性が考えている「平均的な身長」と、男性が考えている「平均的な身長」は違うようです。
ですから、２人が直接会う時に、その女性は相手の男性の身長が期待していたよりも低いといつも感じます。

もし、他の人について話す場合に、「平均的な」を使うと、それは大抵、上から目線的に使われます。
例えば、「彼は平均的な身長」と言えば、それは自分にとって彼は背が低いというニュアンスになります。
「平均的な」は、日本語でも同じようにネガティブなニュアンスを持ちますか？
