Someone who is separated lives apart from their partner but is
not divorced yet. In some marriages in Australia the law requires
that the couple are separated for a year before they can divorce.

It is possible for the husband and wife to live together but still
be separated, too. Of course, they must have separate rooms
and be living separate lives in order for a court to accept that
they are separated. However being able to live in the same
house can help people who want to divorce but don’t have enough
money to live separately.

Is there a similar system in Japan?

「separated」とは、パートナーと別々に住んでいるけれど、まだ離婚していない人達の状態です。
オーストラリアの法律では、離婚する前に１年以上、別々に住まなければいけない場合があります。

しかし、夫と妻が一緒に住んでいても「separated」と認めてくれる場合があります。
もちろん、裁判所に認められるためには、別々の部屋をもっていること、そして分かれた状態で生活することが必要です。
一方で、同じ家に住めるということは、離婚はしたいけれど、別々に住むお金がない、という人たちにとって助けになっています。
