A new month, and a new topic: Partner!

Is it common for people to be engaged before getting married
in Japan? In Western culture, the two people planning to get
married are usually engaged for about one year or so before
getting married.

They usually have an engagement party and get lots of presents
at this time. Then they spend the rest of their engaged time planning
the wedding party!

It’s really meant to be a time of “making sure” that you really want to
marry this person, however, being engaged and having an engagement
party seems like a great way to get extra presents! What’s the culture
in Japan?

日本では、結婚をする前に婚約中の状態でいるのは普通ですか？
西洋文化では、結婚する前に婚約中の期間が１年間くらいあるのが普通です。

彼らは、婚約披露パーティーを開いて、たくさんのプレゼントをこの時にもらいます。
その後、残りの婚約中の期間を使って結婚披露宴の準備をするのです。

この本当の意味は、この人と本当に結婚したいのか、を“確認する”期間なのですが、婚約中の状態になって婚約披露パーティーを開くのは、プレゼントをたくさんもらう為の都合の良い方法にも見えますね！
