October 10 – compete

☆  compete 競争する

============================

If you compete in a contest or game, you take part in it. So, “The athletes will be competing in the Olympics next year” is a simple example of how to use this word. The hard thing for the athletes though is that they have to compete against their team mates if they want to be on the Olympic team.

For Japan, as the host nation, I guess it will be easier to send many athletes to compete in the games. It will cost a lot less money, right? Whereas, in Australia, there is not a lot of budget to use to send athletes to the Olympics. So, while there are probably many, many good athletes here, they have to compete against each for their spot on the team. That must be hard – competing against friends and teammates knowing only one of you can go to the Olympics! What do you think?

Bye,
