============================

If you are rooting for someone, it means you are cheering them on. You are supporting them while they are doing something difficult or trying to win a game. Rooting for someone is basically the informal way of saying cheer someone on.

However, cheer on is usually only used for sports. On the other hand, you can use root for in many different situations. For example, if someone you know is trying to get a new job and has an interview, you might say, “Good luck, I’ll be rooting for you.” Or if you are watching a movie, you might be rooting for one of the characters to win or defeat the other. And, in sports, of course: I’ll be rooting for Kyle Chalmers.

So, if you’re not sure which to use, you can always use root for, it’s just a bit informal.

Bye,

Chris
