December 2: turn down

December 2, 2018      =========

☆  turn down 断る

If you turn down something or someone, you refuse that thing or the person’s request or offer. For example, “I thanked him for the offer, but turned it down.” Or like the useful phrase this week: I had to turn the job down.

Why do you think someone would need to turn a job down? If we’re talking about family and friends it might be because the job was in a location far from family, and so they had to say no. Or they might have to turn down the job because the hours they would have to work might be too long or clash with the time they would spend with family and friends.

Would you ever turn down a job based on family reasons?
