If you console someone who is unhappy about something, you try to make them feel more cheerful. Both my sons have soccer matches today with their club teams… one starts at 9am and one at 11am. I hope they win their games and I don’t have to console them when they get home!!

When people are feeling sad and you console them, it’s best not to say things like, “You’ll feel better soon.” Or “Look on the bright side.” Instead, focus on saying things that let them know that you understand their feelings. You could say things like, “You’re not alone, I’m here for you.” Or “I’m so sorry about X.” Or “It’s perfectly alright to cry.”

How do you console your family or friends when they are feeling sad?
