Today’s Word: eavesdrop

☆  eavesdrop  聞き耳を立てる

============================

To eavesdrop on someone means that you secretly listen in on what they are saying. When I was younger, I used to love doing this at cafes – to eavesdrop on the people at the table next to me. Then, based on the one or two sentences that I had overheard, I would make up a story about them using my imagination about who they were, what they were doing with their lives and so on.

Have you ever done that kind of thing? I don’t tend to eavesdrop on people anymore, but I still like to make up stories about people that I see when I am on the train or in a café or just out and about during the day. How about you? Do you ever eavesdrop? Do you do it to strangers or to people that you know so that you can find out information?

Bye,

Chris
