Today’s Word: tough

☆  tough  厳格な

============================

Tough policies or rules are strict and firm. For example, the Australian government has tough laws on immigration, and you must meet certain criteria before you can be accepted. The government has also recently decided that the test for becoming an Australian citizen is not tough enough, so they will be renewing the content in order to make it harder to become an Australian.

What is the situation like in Japan? Are the immigration laws tough? Is it tough to become a Japanese citizen? I’ve always wondered if you needed a certain level of Japanese language ability to become a Japanese citizen, do you? In Australia, even though we have tough immigration laws, the government does have a great program for non-English speakers. If you qualify, you get 500 hours of free English lessons once you start to live in Australia! Pretty generous, right?
