If you rekindle a feeling or an interest or a thought you used to have, it makes you think about it or feel it again. If you have the desire or feeling for the first time, then using “kindle” would be more appropriate. However, if you have had the feelings in the past, and something triggers those feelings again, then you would use “rekindle.”

Her interest in becoming a doctor was rekindled when she spoke with her sick friend.
The photograph on Facebook rekindled his feelings for his ex-girlfriend.
Watching the sports game rekindled his desire to become a pro baseball player.
