☆ meaning 真意
============================
As you are using English as a second language, you have probably heard the phrase, “don’t know the meaning of the word.” However, did you know that this actually has another meaning that is not about knowing what the word means? For example, if I was your teacher and you said, “I don’t know the meaning of the word.” then I would tell you the translation or the meaning of the word in another way so that you could understand.
However, if I was talking about someone and I said, “They don’t know the meaning of the word.” I would actually mean that they don’t have any experience of that “thing” in their life. For example, “He doesn’t know the meaning of hard work.” actually means that “he is lazy.” Or another example, a woman who has had a baby might say to her husband who is complaining about a pain he has, “You talk about pain! You don’t know the meaning of the word!”
I wonder if you can use this phrase, “don’t know the meaning of the word” about someone in your life?
See you next month!
