If you provoke someone, you deliberately annoy them and try to make them behave aggressively…. Oh my!! This is EXACTLY what my two boys do to each other!! They are always provoking each other! As soon as they wake up each morning, it’s almost as if they are looking for new and different ways to provoke each other! At least they are creative I guess!!
Provoke can also be used to mean that something provokes a reaction; in other words it causes the reaction. For example:
His election success has provoked a shocked reaction.
The destruction of the building provoked anger among the community.
