If you describe someone as timid, you are saying that they are shy, nervous, and lack confidence in themselves. For most westerners being timid is a negative trait, because it is basically the same as saying someone is unconfident, and confidence is a very important trait.
In fact, if you look at some of the other words that also mean timid, they’re not all that nice! Here are some of the more informal words that people use instead of saying timid:
chicken-livered
cowardly
gutless
insecure
unmanly
As you can see, it’s not really good to be timid in western culture! In fact, for men it is considered “unmanly” even. What about in Japanese, is it as negative in Japanese as it is in English?
