☆ grow old　年をとる

I know we’re only in week two, but I jumped ahead to the inspiring saying for week four, which is by Casey Stengel, a famous American baseball player, and the manager of the New York Yankees. He said this: “The trick is growing up without growing old.” It seems like he lived his philosophy in his own life too. He was a baseball player and then a team manager for over 50 years, and there is a memorial to him in the Yankee stadium which describes him as having the “spirit of eternal youth.”
When he was 70 years old, he was fired from his job as the NY Yankees manager, he said, “I was fired for turning 70, so I won’t do that again!” (Of course he won’t you can only turn 70 once in a lifetime, after that it’s 71, 72 and onwards.) Ha ha, even at 70 years old he has a sense of humor about growing old. Maybe that is one way to stay young and vibrant even as we grow old: have a sense of humor!
