If something is describe as “major” then it means it is important, serious, or significant. You usually use this when you are comparing it to other things in the group or situation – even if you don’t actually mention those other things. For example:
Smoking is a major problem among teenagers. (compared to other problems such as skipping school, drugs and so on.)
Exercise plays a major part in preventing heart disease. (compared to other things such as diet and stress levels.)
What was the major factor in your decision to quit your job? (there are many reason, but what was the most important one?)
In most situations, it is obvious what you are comparing the “major” thing to, so there is no need to mention it.
