In western culture, the relationship between the daughter-in-law and her mother-in-law is usually difficult. It’s very common for the relationship to cause problems, sometimes these problems are so big that they can cause divorce! There are millions of jokes about mother-in-laws, but not so many about father-in-laws… I wonder why?
One interesting thing that I noticed was that the jokes about mother-in-laws are usually said by men – in other words, they are talking about their wife’s mother. However, the stories of stress and negative situations are often told by women – in other words, they are talking about their husband’s mother. The mother-in-law is too pushy, too helpful, too possessive, or too critical.
Is it the same in Japan? Are mother-in-laws responsible for a lot of stress that the wife feels? I’m a little bit worried, because if my sons get married in the future, I’ll be a mother-in-law… I hope my daughter-in-laws don’t hate me!! Lol
