There are three ways to use today’s word, adapt. Firstly, you can adapt to a new situation, which means that you change your ideas or behavior to deal with something successfully. “The world is changing, and we will have to be prepared to adapt to those changes.”
Secondly, you can adapt something, to make it suitable for a new purpose. For example, “they put a desk and bookshelf in the spare bedroom to adapt it for use as a home office.”
And finally, you can adapt a book or play so that it can be used in a different way. For example, “his job was adapting novels for movies.” Or “the teacher adapted the play for use in the school.”
