You might know this word from mathematics, the four main functions – add, subtract, multiply, and divide. When you multiply something, it increases greatly in number or amount. With numbers it is easy to see, 6 multiplied by 6 equals 36. However, we can use this word for everyday life too. Here are some examples:
Her boss multiplied his demands on her time. (i.e. her boss increased the amount of work he wanted her to do during work hours.)
Arguments about money multiply during the Christmas season. (because everyone is spending too much money on gifts!)
