============================

Hello!

Welcome to the September monthly review mail. Well, actually it’s more like a mid-October monthly review mail. Sorry about that, to be honest, it’s been hard and busy since my dad died, and I haven’t been able to get much work done.

But the good news is that the 2014 Eigo Techo is now available, here’s the Rakuten URL if you’re interested to know more: http://item.rakuten.co.jp/eigo/c/0000000157/

This year it comes with a neat little red sheet to cover the Japanese translations so that you can check that you know the meanings of the words! Nice!

September’s topic is “Bare Necessities 足るを知る”. Whenever I hear the words “bare necessities” it reminds me of the song from The Jungle Book movie. Do you know that song? Here’s a link to the lyrics: http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/thejunglebook/thebarenecessities.htm
And here’s a link to the song on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ogQ0uge06o

It’s a cute, fun little song, but the lyrics are also very important! It is important to know that we have what we need. According to the song, “the bare necessities of life will come to you.” And there’s no point feeling stressed, looking for things we think we need because usually when we find them, we realize we don’t need or want them anyway!

What are the “bare necessities” in life? Do you think our “needs” and “wants” are changing – for example 20 years ago computers in schools were probably a “want” in Australia, but now they seem like a “need” – if your child is at a school without good computers, they are being disadvantaged compared to other children. How about in Japan? Write a comment for me on Facebook if you have any thoughts on this topic.

And as always a quick review of the monthly words.
