☆ reasonable　妥当な

Just like “custom” and “habit”, “reasonable” and “rational” are
two words which students often get confused. Here’s the difference:

When someone is “reasonable”, they are behaving in a fair and sensible way.
Eg. My mother is always very reasonable.
Be reasonable!

If something (such as a rule or decision) is “reasonable”, then it is acceptable
because it is fair and sensible.
The rules must be accepted as reasonable by the workers.
There is no reasonable explanation for her decision.

If someone (or their behavior) is “rational” then they are thinking clearly and making decisions based on reason, not on emotion.
We need to talk about this as rational people.
His reaction was a totally rational response to the situation.

If this is confusing, try and make a couple of sentences using your own ideas.
This will help you understand the difference better.

“Custom(風習)”と“habit(習慣)”と同じように、“reasonable(妥当な)”と“rational(合理的な)”も生徒さんが混乱してしまう言葉のひとつです。
違いはこちらです。

“Reasonable”な人は、フェアで分別のある人です。
例：
My mother is always very reasonable.　
(母はいつも理性的で分別がある)
“Reasonable”になれると良いですね！

例えば、ルールや判断が“reasonable”なものごととは、それがフェアで合理的な判断であるということです。
The rules must be accepted as reasonable by the workers.
(従業員にとって妥当なルールなので、受け入れられるべきだ)

There is no reasonable explanation for her decision.
(彼女の決定に対する妥当な説明がなかった)

また、“rational”な人とは、思考が明確で、感情ではなく冷静に、理由に基づいて判断を下すことが出来る人のことです。
We need to talk about this as rational people.
(このことは、冷静になって話し合おう)

His reaction was totally rational response to the situation.
(その状況において、彼の反応は冷静だった)
