☆ drama 　劇的な状況

When we talk about a serious play for the theater, TV or radio,
we call it a drama. However, in today’s words, we are using it
to describe a real situation which is either exciting or distressing.
It is a distressing situation, then we may also say it is a tragedy,
not just a drama. However, it depends on what has happened.

When we call someone a “drama queen” we mean that they are
overly dramatic, and make even little unimportant events into
major dramas. Does this kind of “drama queen” personality
exist in Japanese culture, too?

劇場やテレビ、ラジオなどでやる芝居をドラマ(劇)とよびますが、今日の言葉は、実際にエキサイティングなこと、または悲惨なことが起こった時に、その状況を表す言葉です。
それが悲惨な状況なら、“劇的な状況”ではなく“悲劇”といえるでしょう。
何が起こったかによりますね。

“Drama queen”といったら、大げさで、大したことでないことも大きなドラマにしてしまう人のことです。
