There are three ways to use this adjective. The first way is to describe
a person. If you think that something unpleasant or unlucky has
happened to them. This is today’s meaning.

e.g. It was an unfortunate accident.
It is unfortunate that you don’t like your new boss.

The second way is to describe something that has happened, when you
want to say that it was inappropriate, embarrassing or regrettable.

e.g. It’s so unfortunate that this happened now.
He made an unfortunate mistake in his presentation.

The third way is to describe someone who has a difficult life.
e.g. We must raise money to help more unfortunate people.

ひとつ目は人に対して使います。
相手に何か良くないことや、不運なことが起こった時に使います。
これが今日の言葉の意味です。
例：

It was an unfortunate accident.
(不運な事故でしたね)

It is unfortunate that you don’t like your new boss.
(新しい上司が嫌だなんて、残念だね)

ふたつ目は起こってしまった事に対して、それが不適切であったり、当惑させたり、残念なことだったりした場合に使えます。
