Today is “Children’s Day” in Japan. Did you know that many other
countries around the world have a “Children’s Day”? And in fact,
there is a “Universal Children’s Day” celebrated on November 20th
each year – this day was decided by the United Nations in 1954.

Strangely though, Universal Children’s Day is celebrated on the
fourth Wednesday of October in Australia… and “Children’s Day
Australia” is celebrated on the second Sunday in July, so it is not
an actual holiday like it is in Japan. What is the reason for the holiday
in Japan? And why is May 5th a holiday, but not March 3rd?

今日はこどもの日ですね。
世界でも「こどもの日」を祝う国は多くあるということをご存知ですか？
また、毎年11月20日は「世界のこどもの日」です。
日にちは1954年に国連で定められました。

しかし不思議なことに、オーストラリアでは「世界のこどもの日」は10月の第4水曜日、「こどもの日」は7月の第2日曜日にお祝いしています。
つまりこどもの日は、日本のようにいわゆる祝日ではありません。
日本ではこどもの日を祝日にする理由は何ですか？
また、なぜ3月3日ではなく5月5日なのですか？
