Today is “Greenery Day”, this has always struck me as an odd name
for a holiday. I knew that it was originally the birthday of the Showa Emperor, and
that it was changed when the current Emperor Akihito took the throne. However,
I didn’t understand why an odd name such as “greenery” was chosen.

Do you know? I did a quick search and it seems that although the idea of the holiday
is for people to “enjoy nature”, I also found out that the Showa Emperor loved plants
and so it was called “Greenery Day” to keep a connection to this emperor. Is this
true? (I have to ask if it is true, because I found this information on Wikipedia, so who
knows if it is true or not, right?! lol)

今日はみどりの日です。
この日は、祝日にしては変わったネーミングですよね。
元々は昭和天皇の誕生日で、現在の天皇陛下が即位してからみどりの日になったということは知っています。
（※注：元々は4/29が「みどりの日」であり、「昭和の日」制定後に5/4に移動となりました）
しかし、「みどりの日」という変わったネーミングが理解できないのです。

あなたは、この理由をご存知ですか？
少し調べてみたのですが、祝日に自然に親しもうということのほかに、昭和天皇は植物が大好きだったのでみどりの日ということにしたそうです。
本当でしょうか？
(この情報はウィキペディアで見つけたのですが、これが真実かどうかは、誰に訊けば分かるのでしょうね？笑)
