Using the word “merry” to describe someone or something, for example,
“He has a merry nature” or “I could hear merry laughter coming from the
living room” is quite old fashioned. However it is still used, mostly in written
English, as opposed to spoken English.

Some words using “merry” that are used often are these two: “merry-go-round”
and “merry-making”.

“Merry-go-round” has two meanings, one is the ride at the theme park, and the
second meaning is “a continuous series of events or activities”. For example:
“The summer vacation was a merry-go-round of sporting events, beach trips
and parties!”

“Merry-making” is used to describe people who are enjoying themselves in
a lively way, usually by drinking, eating or dancing together.

「Merry(陽気な)」という言葉は、人やものごとを表す言葉です。
“He has a merry nature.(彼は陽気な性格だ)”や、
“I could hear merry laughter coming from the living room.(リビングの方から、陽気な笑い声が聞こえる)”などは、少し古い言い方です。
しかし現在でも、特に書き言葉で使われます。

この言葉には、よく目にする使い方が二つあります。
「Merry-go-round」と、「merry-making」です。

「Merry-go–round」には二つの意味があり、ひとつは、遊園地にあるあの乗り物ですね。
もうひとつは、イベントや活動が続いてめまぐるしいという意味になります。

例：
“The summer vacation was a merry-go-round of sporting events, beach trips, and parties! ”
(夏休みはスポーツのイベントや、海に行ったり、パーティーが続いたりして忙しかったよ)

“Merry-making”は、特にお酒を飲んだり、食べたり、踊ったりすることで、陽気に人生を楽しんでいる人を指します。
