In English we often talk about something having an “intrinsic
value”. Something has intrinsic value if it is valuable because of
it’s basic nature or character. It has value without needing any
connection to something else.

For example, a diamond… most people say that diamonds are valuable,
but in fact, diamonds have no intrinsic value – they are valuable because
they are scarce. I hope that example makes sense! Can you think of
something else that does (or doesn’t) have intrinsic value?

英語では、“intrinsic value(本質的価値)”という言葉をよく使います。
基本的性質や基本的性格の価値があるものが、本質的な価値があると言えます。
他のものと関わることなしに、それ自体に価値があるのです。

例えば、ダイアモンドです。
ダイアモンドは価値があると言う人は多いですが、ダイアモンドそのものに本質的価値はありません。
ダイアモンドは、その希少性が価値を高めているのです。
この例、お分かりいただけたでしょうか？
あなたも、本質的価値を持っている(あるいは持っていない)ものの例を考えてみて下さいね。
