An “acquaintance” is someone that you have met, but you don’t
know them well.In other words, you don’t know them well enough
to call them a “friend”.

What about all the people you know through SNS websites like
Twitter and Facebook? Have you met these people? Would you
call them “friends” or “acquaintances”? Or maybe just “followers”?!

Do you have some way of deciding for yourself if someone is a
friend or an acquaintance?

会ったことはあるけれど、まだよく知らない人を英語で「acquaintance（知人）」と言います。
つまり、まだその人をあまり知らないので「friend（友人）」と呼ぶ程ではないのです。
