This is an idiom that comes from the action
of dropping something breakable, for example,
a vase or a plate which breaks into many pieces.
The plate is broken, and all you can do is pick
up the pieces and try to fix it.

Of course, this idiom is not used for “real
things”but as a metaphor.

For example, a colleague may make a mistake at work
and then other colleagues may have to ‘pick up the
pieces’ and limit the damage. The damage cannot be
undone.

One more common usage is after a relationship breaks
up and you are picking up the pieces of your life.

このイディオムは割れ物(例えば小さな破片に割れる花瓶やお皿)を落とす動作からきています。
お皿は割れているので、破片を拾ってつなぎ合わせるしかないのです。

もちろん、このイディオムは実際のモノにではなく、メタファーとして使われます。

例えば、仕事で同僚がミスをすると、他の同僚がそのミスを“立て直し”てダメージを少なくします。してしまったことは元に戻せないからです。

もう１つの一般的な使われ方は、関係が壊れたあと、人生を“立て直す”場合ですね。
