This word is very easy to understand, even
if you have never seen it before, right? You
can guess that it means “sleep” just by getting
an image of someone “shutting” their eyes. (By
the way, you can use “shut” instead of “close”
any time: for example, “please shut the door.”)

たぶん「寝る」に関連しているだろう、と想像できると思います。
誰かが｢目を閉じている｣ようなイメージですね。
