 Have you heard of the term euphemism before?

Basically it is when you substitute a mild, indirect,
or vague expression for one thought to be offensive,
harsh, or blunt.

In English, people rarely say “to die” and instead use
the euphemism “to pass away”. So, instead of “He
died last month.” we would say, “He passed away
last month.”

 Euphemism（婉曲表現）という単語を聞いたことはありますか？

簡単に説明すると、気に触るようなことや荒々しい表現、露骨な単語の代わりにマイルドに、間接的に、明確さを避けた表現を使う、という感じでしょうか。

 たとえば、英語では
「to die（死ぬ）」
という単語はあまり使いません。

代わりに婉曲表現として、
「to pass away （行く）」
を使います。ですから、

「He died last month（彼は先月、死にました。）」ではなく、
「He passed away last month （彼は先月、なくなりました）」
となります。
