If two or more things are related, there is a connection between them. One of the useful phrases this week is “Our modern-day culture is related to the customs of the past.” This is a good sentence to use if you are explaining Japanese culture to someone who is unfamiliar with Japan. Then of course, you would need to explain how they are related – by giving examples of modern-day culture that existed in some form in the past.

One thing I find interesting is that often popular manga series are related to the past, such as the Vagabond series. This is quite a popular series in English now, too. Of course, I’m not sure how much is true and how much is fiction, but this manga series and the book, Musashi, are both very popular in English. This is the only one that I know of that is famous in English, do you know of any other mangas or books that give us a look into the history of Japan and how it is related to modern-day culture?
